
About Me

Rick Nease is an accomplished illustrator and graphic designer with a career spanning over three decades. His work has significantly influenced visual journalism and design, particularly through his contributions to major publications and various creative projects.
Nease began his professional journey in April 1986 at The Toledo Blade in Toledo, Ohio, where he served as the Editorial Art Director until November 1995. In this role, he was responsible for creating custom illustrations, charts, graphs, and other artwork, utilizing both traditional and digital techniques. He also played a pivotal role in hiring, training, and directing staff members to deve compelling aranhic concents ensurina all graphic concepts, ensuring all illustrative materials met the publication's standards and specifications. His commitment to journalistic integrity was evident as he meticulously validated all information contained within produced informational graphics.
In November 1995, Nease transitioned to the Detroit Free Press in Detroit, Michigan, where he worked as an Art Director and Illustrator until February 2014.
During his tenure, he developed and created illustrations, infographics, and design elements across various sections of the newspaper.
Collaborating closely with editors and writers, Nease conceptualized and executed vis V content that comblemented and enhanced the storytelling. He also managed freelance illustrators, acting as a liaison between them and the editorial team, all while adhering to budget constraints. His innovative approach and dedication to visual excellence earned him recognition, including awards for his contributions to the field.
Beyond his work in newspapers, Nease has been an active freelance artist, illustrator, and designer since February 2008. Operating under Rick Nease Design in Columbia, Tennessee, he has collaborated with a diverse clientele, including major corporations and publishing houses.
Notably, he has served as the lead book designer and illustrator for Read The Spirit. Front Line and many others.

• Meet and coordinate with section editors/writers to develop design and illustration art,
based on knowledge of layout principles and esthetic design concepts.
• Prepare illustrations or rough sketches of material, discussing them with
editors and page designers and making necessary changes.
• Hire and coordinate freelance illustrators. Work as liaison between the illustrator
and the editor and/or writers, managing and staying within freelance budgets.
• Maintain an archive of images, photos, or previous work products.
• Research new software and design concepts.
